The Challenges of Adolescence for Females with Autism

Approaching adolescence can be a challenging time for many individuals. The challenges are certainly different for each gender and females with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may experience these challenges in a unique way compared to their neurotypical peers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will  identify  evidenced-based strategies to assist adolescent females to adjust to the physical changes they experience during puberty.
  • Participants will identify 2 ways educators and families can teach adolescent females skills of personal safety at home, school, and the community.
  • Participants will identify methods to use to help ease the social transition during the adolescent years.

Early Childhood Issues: Eating, Toileting and Separation

The joys and stress of parenting and educating young children are many.  Toilet training, feeding (appropriate mealtime behaviors) and separation from a caregiver are critical life skills for healthy independent living.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the steps to eating
  • Understand the pre-requisite skills to toileting
  • Setting up the environment for success
  • Will have 2 strategies to ease seperation
